World Social Media Day was first launched by Mashable 10 years ago on June 30, 2010. They created the holiday as a way to recognize the impact that social media has on global communication. Around the world, there are 3.725 billion people who actively use social media, and most of them use it every day. Social media is how we connect with people in a simple and fast way.
The history
The first social media platform was called Six Degrees, created in 1997 by Andrew Weinreich. After that, social media did not start gaining real popularity until the launch of Friendster in 2002 and MySpace in 2003. Soon after, Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, and quickly became the largest social media platform with over one billion users. Newer common platforms include Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, TikTok and WeChat. These platforms have evolved from written messages to photo and video sharing that can be seen by millions of people.
